Anxiety & Overwhelm
When your mind won’t slow down, even ordinary life can feel overwhelming.
Anxiety can make you question yourself, anticipate what might go wrong, and feel responsible for keeping everything under control. You may look capable on the outside while privately feeling exhausted, tense, or unable to quiet your thoughts.
Therapy can give you space to understand what is fueling the anxiety, develop new ways to respond, and feel more grounded in yourself and your life.
Each therapist at Rise Counseling supports clients experiencing anxiety, stress, and emotional overwhelm. Our clinicians bring different personalities, areas of interest, and therapeutic approaches to their work, allowing us to help you connect with someone whose style and availability fit what you are seeking.
In-person anxiety therapy in Morgantown, West Virginia, and virtual therapy throughout West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina.
When everything feels like too much.
Overwhelm can happen when you have been carrying too much for too long.
You may be balancing work, relationships, parenting, caregiving, school, health concerns, or the expectations you place on yourself. Even when every responsibility seems important, continually operating beyond your capacity can leave you feeling disconnected, resentful, scattered, or emotionally depleted.
Therapy offers a place where you do not have to perform, manage anyone else’s reaction, or have the right answer. Together, we can slow things down and begin identifying what you need—not only what everyone else needs from you.
How Anxiety Might Appear:
How people may experience anxiety does not always look the same. Sometimes anxiety is noticeable - a racing heart, a sense of dread, or worried thoughts that won’t stop.
Other times, it can hide behind productivity, perfectionism, irritability, physical tension, or the need to stay one step ahead of everything.
Anxiety and overwhelm may look like:
Generalized anxiety and persistent worry
Panic attacks
Social anxiety
Work-related stress and burnout
Perfectionism and fear of failure
People-pleasing and difficulty setting boundaries
Relationship and family anxiety
Parenting and caregiver overwhelm
Perinatal and postpartum anxiety
Health-related anxiety
School and academic pressure
Life transitions and uncertainty
ADHD-related overwhelm
Intrusive or repetitive thoughts
Difficulty relaxing or feeling present
We don’t need to defeat it… we need to understand it.
At Rise Counseling, we approach anxiety with curiosity.
Therapy can help you understand where your anxiety may have derived from - even well-intentioned places like trying to anticipate problems, avoid mistakes, maintain connection, or create a sense of control in places you had none.
Some people benefit from practical tools that offer relief in the present. Others want to understand the experiences, expectations, relationships, or beliefs beneath their anxiety. Often, meaningful therapy includes both.
Our goal is to help you trust yourself more fully, respond to anxiety with greater assurance, and create a life that is not weighed down by tension.
Some Approaches to Treating Anxiety
this is not an exhaustive list…
Understanding the Root of Anxiety
Psychodynamic and relational therapy can help you explore how earlier experiences, relationships, and expectations may be shaping your current fears, coping patterns, and beliefs about yourself. We can also look at the function anxiety is serving, as it can sometimes be protective.
Changing anxious thought patterns
Cognitive approaches can help you recognize patterns such as catastrophizing, self-criticism, or assuming the worst and develop more balanced ways of responding.
Regulating emotions and physical stress
Mindfulness, grounding, and nervous-system-informed strategies can help you notice anxiety earlier and respond to physical tension, racing thoughts, and emotional overwhelm.
Introducing practical skills
CBT- and DBT-informed strategies can support emotional regulation, distress tolerance, boundary-setting, communication, and decision-making when anxiety feels consuming.
